Even if you don’t believe in Chinese astrology, you can still celebrate the Year of the Dog with your most celebrated health and wellness ally and best friend.

Montes de Oca, the author of Dog as My Doctor, Cat as My Nurse: An Animal Lover’s Guide to a Healthy, Happy & Extraordinary Life, explains five ways to have a happy Year of the Dog:

  1. Get Fit Together: Studies show you are more likely to put on your sneakers if your walking partner is a dog. There is nothing more dogs love to do than to walk. For extra credit, check out a dog-friendly gym.
  2. Play More: Spending time playing can strengthen your brain and make you more creative. Dogs will take any opportunity to play, especially with their best friend – you.
  3. Serve Others: Helping others benefits our emotional well-being and provides purpose in our lives. Join the ranks of service dogs and their owners by reaching out and helping someone else.
  4. Take a Tech Timeout: Dogs aren’t into computers, tablets or cell phones. They relish personal touch and connection. So why not give your brain a break and make your dog happy by reducing your technology time and engaging in touch therapy with them?
  5. Focus on the Now: Most of us spend a lot of time thinking about yesterday and worrying about tomorrow. Dogs spend most of their time in the right now. And look how happy they are. If you are looking for a guru to help you become more mindful, look no further than your canine companion who knows that the present is the best present of all.

Why Does Your Dog Sleep So Much?

There is no doubt in this statement that a dog is a man’s best friend. Many people all around the world are dog lovers. Dogs are amazing pets and not only pets they do become part of the family. They are always happy, playful, and cheerful and will always greet their masters with a smile on their face and a wagging tail. Like any family member, if any happened to them, you’ll be concerned.

The average dog sleeps 14 hours a day but depending on breeds, that number can be 16-18 hours.  Sometimes owners do notice that their dogs are sleeping more than usual which can be alarming.  We’ll go into the many reasons why our canine friends would sleep more than usual.

Reasons Why Your Dog Sleeps So Much

  1. Level of Activity: Whether your dog is sleeping more than usual depends on the level of activity. How active is your pet is one of the main reasons which determines why they sleep so much. Usually, dogs stay at home while their owners are busy at work in which case they feel bored and left out. This could make them sleep longer as they have nothing better to do which is why vets do suggest that the owners should spend ample time with their respective pets so that they remain active. Dogs that are specially trained for certain tasks such as a part of a K9 unit for the police department stay busier, therefore, sleep less.

  1. Age Factor: Age does play a huge factor when it comes to knowing why your dog is sleeping so much. Just like humans when dog’s age they require more sleep as they tire out much more quickly. There is not much difference between humans and their respective dogs in this regard. Just like human beings in their youth are much livelier and active which is why they require less sleep, in the same way, dogs at their young age are much more alive and active which is why they sleep less. But as they grow old they sleep more because they get tired easily.

  1. Medical Conditions: Medical conditions through which your dog is suffering can be one of the main reasons for them to sleep. Just like when you get ill certain medications have side effects and drowsiness might be one of them. Sleeping habits can also change due to medical conditions. There are certain medical conditions, which your dog might sleep more like for example Canine Depression. Canine depression is a medical condition whereby the dog becomes depressed. This depression can happen due to a lot of factors like for example when the dog is trying to adjust to a new environment like a new home and loss of a companion are the two most common triggers of canine depression.

It can be seen from the above discussion that there are various reasons why a dog might sleep more than usual.  To understand their needs and feelings is part of being a dog lover and their master.

Sleep is important, so make sure you have the best pet bed for your furry friend. If you are looking for the best dog beds reviewed check out DogBedZone.

The Root of Barking

If you really want to control barking, you’d better know why your dog is barking. Different types and sources of barking require different solutions.

  1. Boredom – This is the most common source of barking and can be solved with some extra exercise or attention.
  2. Anxiety – You need to teach your dog to handle your departure more calmly. This is a long process but well worth it for the quiet and the health of your dog.
  3. Warning – A dog should always bark at strangers or threats but only to a certain point.
  4. Attention-Seeking – A dog in want of attention will bark at times. Never respond to this behavior or you will only reinforce it.
  5. Startled – A dog that gets scared or startled may bark in confusion.
  6. Playfulness – Playful dogs will bark at times to show their excitement. This is completely normal.
  7. Communicating – Dogs use barking to communicate with each other, saying “I’m here.” This is normal but should not be allowed to persist too long.

Stopping the Barking

Getting rid of excessive barking, starts every time with basic control of your dog. The best way to do this is to be consistent with your commands. If you train your dog to come, lie down and stay, he will be very focused on completing those tasks and should stop barking completely.

Avoid punishment or rewarding of bad behavior. Instead, you should only reward good behavior. If you give your dog a “stop” phrase to stop barking and he does so, reward him with a treat. Finally, never give your dog loving attention when he barks.

Opioid crisis Affecting Police Dogs. Here’s The Sad Reality

0
police dog addiction

police dog addiction

As drug addiction grows in the U.S., so is addiction among police dogs.

When police call the K-9 Unit in to sniff out drugs, there is a potential that dogs may sniff or ingest the drugs they find.

This problem has long been ignored. But now organizations have come together to provide overdose prevention training.

For Paul Ressler, president and CEO of The Overdose Prevention Agency Corp., every life is precious, and that includes K-9s.

Ressler, as well as representatives in the local and national medical and law enforcement communities, have cautioned that canine police units can be put in deadly situations as they sniff out drugs. As a result, Ressler with Sgt. Scott Kivet of the Robbinsville PD and Sgt. Joseph Angarone of the Mercer County Prosecutors Office have coordinated efforts for TOPAC to partner with area law enforcement and NorthStar VETS to provide training to administer the opioid antidote naloxone in case of emergencies.

Precautions such as using naloxone, better known as Narcan, are necessary due to the increasing presence of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids which can be more than 50 times stronger than heroin or prescription painkillers. Since the drug detection dogs use their noses in the course of doing their job, they are at great risk of inhalation or ingestion of the dangerous substances.

I felt compelled to do this for the dogs,” Ressler said. He will dedicate this program to his late son Corey, and thus the project will be named “Corey’s K-9s.”

“Police K-9s are on the frontlines of combating the opioid epidemic and they face a high risk of exposure to narcotics,” Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said.

“These dogs don’t search for drugs with eyes and hands like their human counterparts. They are actually breathing them in.  The Mercer County law enforcement community is extremely fortunate to have partnered with TOPAC, the U.S. Police K-9 Association and NorthStar VETS to provide the naloxone kits for dogs and the necessary training to their handlers. With the uptick in heroin and fentanyl seizures in Mercer County and across the state, it is critical we give officers the ability to recognize the signs and symptoms of exposure, and the antidote necessary to save their K-9 partners.”

In Judge Judy’s courtroom, this dog has the last say.

A man took an alleged dognapper to court in an attempt to get his dog back.

“Is this his dog?” Judge Judy asks the woman. The woman avoids the question.

Judge Judy tells a witness to get the dog from the back. She instructs her to drop the dog down on the floor.

The dog immediately recognizes the man and leaps all over him.

Case closed.

Here Are 5 Things You Need To Look For When Buying CBD Oil

0

One of the most common questions we hear is where can someone purchase CBD and does it matter who you purchase it from. The simple answer is a resounding yes!

At Innovetpet, we strive to give our customers high-quality CBD oil with complete transparency, because we have all too often see shady companies take advantage people who are just trying to help give their pets a better life.

That’s why we put together a list of five reasons our PureCBD+ stands out and is unmatched by the rest.

1. It’s Starts With The Source

First, your CBD oil should be sourced from high-quality hemp and not cannabis, and we are proud to say that our CBD oil is derived from organic high-quality hemp. Unfortunately, many companies make false claims that their CBD oil is legal and not derived from cannabis. We don’t believe in deceiving our customers like that. That’s why we wear the proof that our CBD always comes from a great hemp source on our sleeves.

Second, we don’t source our hemp from China or Russia like others. All of our organic high-quality hemp comes from Oregon, Colorado, and Europe to provide our customers with CBD oil derived from the best hemp sources.

2. How The Method of Extraction Makes All The Difference

Lighter fluid, heavy alcohols, and other dangerous solvents are common ways other CBD companies extract their CBD oil, and we feel that’s completely counterintuitive. CBD is meant to improve health, not hurt it.

That’s why we solely use CO2 extraction, which has been shown to be the only completely safe way to extract CBD. This leaves you will pure cannabinoid hemp oil that contains no harmful toxins that threaten CBD oils therapeutic nature.

3. Don’t Be Fool By CBD Derived From Just Hemp Seeds

Hemp seeds are fantastic and provide a healthy dose of protein and omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids, but there is no CBD or other cannabinoids found in them. CBD has to come from the plant itself and that why we derive our CBD from both the whole plant and the seeds making for a powerful combination that has a potential wealth of health benefits.dog cbd, cannabis for dogs

4. There Isn’t Just CBD In Your Oil

Just like with the method of extraction, dangerous and unhealthy chemicals like ethanol and propylene glycol are used to mix with CBD oil to create a more liquid and less concentrated oil. CBD hemp oil by itself is thick and has a syrupy consistency, and does need to be mix with a mixing agent since it’s highly concentrated.

We only mix our CBD oil with hemp seed oil that is healthy for consumption whether you’re a dog or a human, and provides you with extra health benefits. While it’s cheaper to mix with ethanol and propylene glycol, it’s not only potentially dangerous to our pets but can degrade and destroy the cannabinoids in the oil making it worthless.

5. Affordability and Accountability

Sometimes cheap is good, other times it raises alarms. Cheap CBD oil falls into the latter category. At Innovetpet, we believe that all CBD oil manufacturers need to be transparent and completely open with their customers. That means always providing certification of analysis, offering returns on any item, and giving customers a direct link to open communication through various methods like support groups.

One thing that always gives away a poor CBD product is a white label. When you purchase CBD oil you want the label to clearly state how much active CBD content and supporting cannabinoids and terpenes there are in the bottle.

After taking one look at our PureCBD+, you’ll instantly relief and know that you’re in good hands.
