Dog grooming is often overlooked by many dog owners, but it will help improve the behaviour of your dog.

Dogs require a lot of attention and grooming them is a way to spend quality time with your furry friend. Grooming your dog is much more than just brushing them and is an essential part of caring for you dogs and its health.

Grooming Will Improve the Appearance of Your Dog

Grooming your dog regularly will improve the appearance making their coat look flawless and can remove a lot of loose hairs and stop knotting from occurring. Grooming your dog regularly can also have behaviour benefits. They’re more likely to want to interact with people and can give them more opportunities to want to socialise.

Grooming Your Dog Regularly Allows You to Give Them a Health Check

When you groom your dog, it gives you a good chance to take a look at their body. You should take this time to look for lump or bumps on the skin. When grooming them you should take extra care when removing matts and knotted hair, they can cause your furry friend pain if you catch it.

Stopping these problems early by having regular grooming sessions with your furry friend can help you stop potential problems much faster and will be more easily treatable if they require the attention of a veterinarian.

Regularly Grooming Your Pooch Will Also Provide A Better Household Cleanliness

The more regularly you groom your dog the less likely you’re to find clumps of hair lying around your home. Dogs shed a lot of hair and you will find this attached to your couches, rugs, curtains, bedding and floors and much more. Grooming them regular can prevent this and minimises the amount of hair that falls from your furry friend’s coat. This is especially helpful if someone in your family suffers from allergies as there are less hairs floating around the room which can trigger an allergy.

Grooming is Essential For Bonding With Your Dog

Dog grooming is often seen as a chore, but it actually has many benefits for socialisation. It allows you to spend some quality time with them showing them love and affection and ensuring that they’re in good health. Many dog owners do not understand the benefits of grooming their dog regularly and it should be top of the list of your priorities.

Dogs require a lot of attention and providing them that attention can be done in many different ways and doesn’t always have to be a walk or playing with them. Maintaining their health can also provide them with a great bonding session.

Grooming your dog will Improve Hygiene

Regularly grooming your dog can improve its hygiene as when you’re walking them, they’re picking up mud, sticks and other sources of bacteria. Keeping their fur coat trimmed and unknotted can help reduce the amount of dirt and other forms of bacteria and can also make them easier to clean.

Brushing your dogs teeth can also prevent behaviour problems as keeping there teeth in good condition will prevent them pain in the future and pain can cause a dog to have behavioural issues in the future especially when they’re older.

How Dog Grooming Can Affect Behaviour

Having regular grooming sessions with your furry friend will provide them with a wide range of social benefits. They’re more likely to be encouraged to meet new people and interact better with other dogs and animals. Many dogs which are seen as a liability have not been well cared for by there owners and probably do not trust people because they have not had much interaction with other people or been handled very often. This can make a dog nervous when meeting new people which is also unfair on the dog as it can hamper their ability to interact in the right way with people.

Conclusion of Dog Grooming

Dog grooming provides a fantastic range of benefits for your dog from health, hygiene, bonding, household cleanliness, appearance and much more. As already said grooming your dog regularly yields a wealth of benefits which can improve their behaviour in the long run not just the short and maintaining your dog’s health should be a priority of yours as a dog owner.

Grooming them makes them feel loved and cared for, just like any human expects to be treated you should show them the same affection and they will bloom into a amazing best friend and the perfect family member.

PetSmart Vet Shares 5 Critical Doggy Teeth Tips

Dental disease affects more than 80% of adult cats and dogs, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

To keep your pet healthy and smiling, PetSmart’s resident veterinarian and pet care expert, Jennifer Freeman, DVM, shares advice on how to take a proactive approach to your pet’s dental health.

Periodontal disease occurs when there is a buildup of plaque and tartar that causes either periodontal pockets or gum recession around the tooth. It is the most common clinical condition in cats and dogs.

“It’s very important to treat periodontal disease as soon as possible because if left untreated, the infection can spread deeper into the tooth socket and could destroy the bone,” said Freeman.

“This could then lead to tooth loss, costly treatments, and could impact your pet’s heart, liver, and kidneys.” Plaque and tartar may also cause bad breath, gum inflammation and bleeding, and pain that can negatively impact your pet’s quality of life.

If you suspect your pet has dental disease, check for warning signs like bad breath and inflamed gums, as those are usually the first symptoms.

“Bad breath is usually a good indication of some sort of periodontal issue,” Freeman said.

“If you notice red gums, bleeding in the mouth or bad breath in conjunction with yellow deposits on your pet’s teeth that aren’t easily scraped away, your pet needs dental care.”

To prevent dental disease in the first place, Freeman suggests implementing a dental care routine for your pet. Once a month, examine your pet’s mouth and carefully scan the teeth and gums for any signs of dental disease. Also, implement regular dental cleanings with your veterinarian and an at-home dental care routine.

“Brushing your pet’s teeth removes the soft plaque film that forms into tartar over time,” Freeman said.

“Use a toothbrush and toothpaste specially designed for dogs or cats and aim to brush your pet’s teeth at least once a week or more often if possible.”

You can help your pup by starting dental maintenance early, but to make it a pleasant experience, wait until your puppy has their adult teeth (at or around six months old) before using a toothbrush.

Feeding your pet a teeth cleaning kibble is another great way to fight dental disease. Dental formulas for dogs and cats have ingredients that may help prevent plaque and tartar buildup, and the kibble pieces are shaped to help scrub plaque from teeth. New research shows that, while the majority of rental housing allows pets, significant restrictions present hurdles for pet-owning renters.

It also shows that there are major opportunities for property owners and operators who can ease such restrictions.

The research is a part of an initial phase, of a Pet-Inclusive Housing Initiative by non-profit organizations Michelson Found Animals Foundation and the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI). The goal is to promote access to the joy of pets in every home.

The organizations released the results of the most comprehensive survey research to-date on pets and rental housing in the United States.

The research shows that, while the majority of rental housing allows pets, significant restrictions present hurdles for pet-owning renters. The research also shows that there are major opportunities for property owners and operators who can ease such restrictions.

“Michelson Found Animals and HABRI had a clear goal with this research: to provide actionable insights that can help make it easier for renters to have pets in their lives,” said Aimee Gilbreath, executive director, Michelson Found Animals.

“More pet-inclusive rentals could lead to millions more adoptions for renters who want pets.”

One third of pet owners in restricted pet-friendly housing said they would get another pet if restrictions were lifted, and 35% of non-pet-owners in non-pet-friendly housing would get a pet if restrictions were lifted. With changes that would allow more pets to be accommodated, as many as 8.75 million animals could find new homes over time.

  • 24% of renters with pets said that “my pet has been a reason for me needing to move,” which means as many as 6 million people have experienced a move related to pet ownership at some point in their lives.
  • 83% of property managers say that pet-friendly vacancies can be filled faster.
  • 79% of property managers say that pet-friendly vacancies are easier to fill.
  • Residents in pet-friendly units stay longer, averaging 4.6 years vs. 3.8 years for non-pet-friendly units.

“Pets are good for business. This data shows there are real opportunities for property owners and operators to achieve higher levels of occupancy and retention,” Feldman added.

“With the Pet-Inclusive Housing Initiative, we hope to bring housing providers and the pet care community together, so that everyone can learn and benefit from this new data.”

6 Reasons Why Dogs are Better than Cats

Reasons why dogs are better than cats

Dogs are “a man’s best friend” and for good reason.

Due to their loyal and selfless personality, there are numerous reasons why dogs are better than cats.  In addition, since dogs are generally a lot higher energy than cats, there are several differences between the two species.   We love all animals, but below we will explore the six best reasons why dogs are better than cats.

#1 Dogs Live a Way More Active Lifestyle than Cats

While cats tend to live independently inside of a house, dogs love to run around.  As a pet owner, this forces you to live an active lifestyle that includes walking outside, running, or even hiking.  Living an active lifestyle with your dog has significant health benefits such as reduced stress and anxiety.  This is definitely one of the most significant reasons why dogs are better than cats.

#2 Dogs Can Serve a Purpose to Help Others

Dogs can serve a significant purpose in life by being of service.  For instance, dogs can assist the blind, be a therapy dog, work on farms, or even help the police and military.  Dogs have essentially been helping people as long as they have been on earth being herders and drovers of cattle. When’s the last time you saw a cat do any of these acts of service?

#3 Dogs Come in Many More Shapes and Sizes than Cats

While cats have different types of breeds, they don’t come in a variety of shapes and sizes like dogs do.  For instance, dogs can range in weight from 5 pounds to over 100 pounds and be groomed in many different types of ways.  For example, the design dog called a Goldendoodle, can have many different Goldendoodle haircuts that range that physically alter the appearance of the dog from looking like a lion to teddy bear.  Check out the website We Love Doodles for information on the new doodle dog breed.

#4 Dogs are Way More Trainable than Cats

While cats can definitely be trained, they cannot be trained as much as a dog.  Dogs can participate in high skilled events like agility, herding, and fetching objects.  In addition, they are easily taught basic commands like shake, sit, lie down, and wait.  They’re desire for food as well as their willingness to appease their owners makes them significantly more trainable than a cat.

#5 Dogs are More Loyal and Can Protect You

Most dogs will alert you when strangers come to the door or defend their territory if they feel threatened.  They may bark or growl, but at the end of day they attempt to defend their owners no matter how big an intruder may seem.  On the other hand, cats are more likely to run away and defend themselves than protect their own territory.

#6 Dogs Provide More Entertainment and Want to Have Fun

Dogs love to play and interact with their owners on a daily basis.  Several breeds of dog love to fetch, play with a frisbee, or tug on a rope.  Dogs also love to play with other dogs which forces you to meet new people whether it be at a dog park or through doggy play dates.  On the other hand, there’s only so much that you can play with a cat whether it be small strings or laser pointers.  Playing with a cat is also shorter-lived as their attention span is a lot shorter.

We hope you enjoyed some of our reasons why dogs are better than cats.  We still love cats and advocate you check out Miauland for all your cat-related questions.  In general, cats make better pets if you’re looking for a more independent and lower energy pet.

9 Friendly Dogs That Are Known to Be Great with Kids

If you’re thinking of introducing a furbaby into the family, the first step is evaluating how they will get along with your human babies.

Every breed has the potential to be friendly or not depending on how they’re trained and socialized. However, there are some breeds that are known to be more friendly and easier to train.

In this post, we’re sharing 9 friendly dogs you’ll want to consider if you have children.

9 Friendly Dogs for Kids and Families

#1 Bernese Mountain Dog

If you have a large backyard or live on a farm, the bernese mountain dog could be the best choice. Large and fluffy, they have a gentle nature and are highly intelligent.

#2 Labrador Retriever

Labs are one of the most popular choices for families. They are often quick learners and can get along with just about anyone: Kids, adults, strangers and other pets. Just be aware that they need a lot of exercise, so be sure you can make time for that before considering one.

#3 Golden Retriever

Right after labs, golden retrievers are probably the second most popular choice when it comes to a predictable breed. They’re known to be happy, friendly dogs who love spending time with family. Their wits make them an easier breed to train, but again, make sure you make time for plenty of exercise.

#4 Bulldog

If you’re looking for a lower-energy family dog, the bulldog is a good choice. While he’ll still enjoy walks and playtime, he also likes a good cuddle with a family member.

#5 French Bulldog

If you’re looking for a smaller version of the bulldog, the french bulldog is one to consider. If you live in a city or in an apartment, these pups don’t need a lot of space or room to run. Daily exercise is necessary but they’re more low-maintenance, which is ideal for busy families. Still, they love to have fun and have a playful attitude that will get along well with children.

#6 Pug

Pugs are friendly dogs who will also love snoozing with the kids. Since they’re small, you probably don’t need to worry about them knocking over a child in their rambunctious puppy days. Although every dog needs exercise, pugs are lower maintenance when it comes to physical activity.

#7 Collies

If you’re looking for a dog who learns quickly and is a loyal member of the family, learn more about Collies. These happy doggos need plenty of room to play around, so they’re not ideal for the city. Their furry hair makes them high-maintenance on the grooming scale, but that could be a good chore for your kids growing up. However, there are collies with rougher fur that require a little less grooming.

#8 Poodle

Poodles are versatile dogs that can be either small, medium or large, depending on which will fit your family best. They could be a good option for kids with allergies since they’re hypoallergenic. Although there’s a perception that poodles are prissy and only for the pretentious, that’s not true. Poodles are loyal and kind family members that love spending time with others.

Pet sitting can be a nice break for both you and your pet, so let’s look at some of the options.

One option is to choose a local pet sitter, who will come to your home at your convenience, take care of your pet, clean up after it, and then leave. A local pet sitter might offer pet sitting at the local beach, at a park, or at your home while you are on vacation.

Pet sitting is usually limited to animals that are small enough for the dog to be comfortable and that the owner is comfortable with. If you need help getting your pet to the sitter or you want someone that is less formal and more comfortable with you, then this might be a better option.

All professional pet sitting services should take your pet to the veterinarian. They should make sure that your pet is healthy and well during your vacation.

Since some pet sitting services will visit your home in addition to your vacation, they should keep your pet safe while you are away. They should have a procedure that includes washing your pet’s paws and skin, disinfecting, grooming, cleaning out the litter box, feeding your pet, and bathing your pet.

Some pet sitting services will leave the responsibility up to you, while others will leave everything up to the owner of the pet.  These are just a few of the many options that you have and if you look around you can find something suitable for your needs.
